Did Donald Trump incite an insurrection against the US Capitol? Many of his supporters sacked the capitol and some interpret the speech he gave immediately prior to this and the many other statements he made as incitements of insurrection.

Event begins at 10am to 12pm. RSVP at Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/Sacramento-Politics-and-Philosophy-Group/events/pzwczrycccbnc/

There are really interesting dynamics at play in the Senate impeachment trial. Minority leader Mitch McConnell might vote to convict and if he does, a significant percent of the GOP senators will vote with him, and Trump might end up being convicted, which would strip him of his pension and Secret Service protection. Perhaps McConnell knows that his party has become a Trump cult and that the medium-to-long-term prospects are bad and getting dimmer. The Georgia election results, the GOP losing the majority, and also the fallout from the sacking of the capitol come together in making it more difficult for the GOP to find a winning formula for the coming years. It might be that McConnell wants desperately to go back to the dynamics of the early Obama years, where his relentless obstruction of Obama’s agenda led to them retaking control of congress. That dynamic won’t be possible as long as Trump controls the GOP. McConnell probably hates the thought of what votes to convict Trump would do to the party’s morale and to the rank-and-file membership, but he probably realizes that he needs to tear off the bandaid and attempt to rebuild the Republican party.

For anyone who thinks Trump did incite the insurrection, they would have to hope that Trump is convicted, since accountability for crimes needs to be a first step toward reconciliation and reform of the US political system. McConnell might see that he and the GOP are screwed either way, but he might actually figure that the least worst thing they could do would be to cast off Trump from their party as soon as possible. What do you guys think?
