Energetic Sac-FAN members will partner up with sister group Atheists and Other Freethinkers (AOF) to clean litter & debris from a two-mile stretch of Highway 99 just north of Elkhorn Blvd. Note, CalTrans actually pays a stipend for this.
So join us to make a difference! Bag trash and pick up all kinds of mysterious and often edgy items. Anyone may help. This is a great event for older kids, too (but leave little ones at home, please).
Note: Wet conditions or poor visibility = cancelled event. If unsure, contact the Event Organizer (Don, 916-805-9337).
We’ve got Everything You Need:
The Organizer will provide grabbers, trash bags, gloves, colorful vests, and virtually everything else needed to help restore the environment.
Getting There:
Our section of the highway is at the Elkhorn Blvd exit, just north of Natomas where the I-5 and CA-99 split.

Meet at the Park and Ride located on Elkhorn Blvd, just west of the CA-99 freeway off ramp. (Go north from Sac on I-5, take the “Hwy 99 – Yuba City, Marysville” exit. Exit at Elkhorn Boulevard less than a mile north. Turn left, cross the overpass. The park-&-ride lot will be right there on your left.) If the P&R lot is not accessible, park on the south side of Elkhorn Blvd near it.
Why we Do It:
A San Francisco Chronicle article quotes a curator in the Monterey Bay Aquarium husbandry department as saying that “every year, plastic debris kills 40% of newly hatched albatross chicks… their parents see shiny things on the surf, ingest them and regurgitate them to the chicks. It’s a slow and painful death.”
Our 2-mile stretch of Highway 99 north of Elkhorn Blvd. may seem far removed from the native habitat of the albatross, the ocean. And yet not an insignificant amount of refuse that we collect could ultimately be swept by the rain into tributaries and into the ocean a mere 85 miles away. This is an interconnected world.
Remember, we provide all the equipment needed to clean the area. We just need wonderful you!
