Ancient Christian Study Group – Sacramento | Saturday 2025-01-19 @ Noon

Change of Venue: Beginning in 2024, we have decided to change to a new location that will offer more space, whether we want to meet inside or out. We will be meeting at Mast Coffee at 1430 28th Street.

The history of ancient Christianity is an endlessly fascinating topic. Don Fox and Steve Thoreson are facilitating this meet up to review the history of Rome, religions of the Roman empire, Gnosticism, Mystery cults, history of Christian persecutions, biographies of major Christians, the history of the Bible and many other related topics. If you ever wanted to sort out Eusebius from Clement, or Constantine from Diocletian, or the Vulgate from the Septuagint, then this group is for you.

Previous biblical knowledge is not required to participate.

We will be meeting every third Sunday. This month’s topic is the Secret Gospel of Mark. There’s a lot of parts to this story with lots of online resources. Here’s a link to the letter that talks about the gospel https://www.earlychristianwritings.com/text/secretmark.html and here’s a link to Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secret_Gospel_of_Mark?wprov=sfti1# Here are two links to Bart Ehrman’s podcast about it: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/misquoting-jesus-with-bart-ehrman/id1650657462?i=1000666748754 and https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/misquoting-jesus-with-bart-ehrman/id1650657462?i=1000668126191. Gay Jesus, Carpocratians, and possible forgery, don’t miss it!

Hope to see you there!
