Sunday Assembly is held in the Reason Center at 1300 Ethan Way, Suite 675 toward the back of the building. As always, families are welcome and child care is provided. The doors open at 10:30 am and the program will begin at 11:00 am.

Our speaker for this month is Kira Dunn, one of our Sunday Assembly community, now living in San Diego.

Kira first had the privilege of speaking to Sunday Assembly about Christopher Dunn’s case in 2017. She became aware of Chris’ case in 1999, when she was assigned to write his story for the online magazine Justice Denied. Chris had been convicted of murder at the age of 18 based solely upon the testimony of two children, ages 12 and 14. Kira was moved by the strong evidence of Chris’ innocence. Once the story was published, she continued advocating for him, and their relationship strengthened over time. The first witness, now a grown man, recanted in 2005, explaining that he accused Chris because he didn’t like him. It took 10 years to find the second witness, who explained that he testified against Chris because the older boy told him to. After a 2018 evidentiary hearing, a judge ruled Chris innocent in 2020. However, he did not order Chris’ release because in Missouri, proving your innocence is not enough to free you unless you’re on death row. It took the support of two St. Louis top prosecutors and a ruling of innocence from yet another judge to finally free Chris, despite the Missouri Attorney General’s continued opposition. Chris walked free on July 30 of this year. As he returns to a changed world after 34 years of wrongful incarceration, he and Kira just celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary, and are navigating their new life together.
